Schools of the Spirit

A Spiritual Formation Program of the Marist Brothers' Sydney Province of Australia

The area of animation of staff and students is becoming increasingly demanding and complex. To meet this, need a program has been designed to provide ongoing formation for staff through our ‘Schools of the Spirit’ series. As the province Sharing Our Call program provides formation in Marist charism and spirituality, the ‘Schools of the Spirit’ series provides further ongoing support, engagement and empowerment for staff in the area of faith formation.

Aims

The series focuses on:

  • providing an opportunity for reflection on the spirituality of Marist schools, and
  • deepening our understanding of Marist charism,
  • supporting staff in the role of spiritual animation within our school communities,
  • providing practical support and resources.

Participants do not need to be explicitly involved with the spiritual animation of staff and students, but may benefit from further personal development or the invitation to be more involved/aware of the implications of schools whose heart is the spiritual development and formation of young people.

Process

Schools are invited to send two members of staff to participate in a 4 part series through a process of input from presenters, dialogue and reflection. The series will be held on the following dates in 2007:

  • Session One – Wednesday, 21st February
  • Session Two – Wednesday, 21st March
  • Session Three – Wednesday, 2nd May
  • Session Four – Wednesday, 30th May

Time: 1.30pm-3.30pm (tea and coffee will be available from 1.00pm).

Venue: Marist Ministries Office Conference Room, Marist Brothers' Provincial House, 14 Drummoyne Avenue, Drummoyne.

*Schools of the Spirit: Within the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), the traditional meetings of ministers and elders were sometimes referred to as a ‘School of the Spirit.’ In gathered worship, Friends learned to discern the movement of the Inward Teacher and test their discernment with one another. This practiced listening extended into every aspect of their lives.
