About Us

Marist Brothers Sydney Province of Australia

To Make Jesus Christ known and loved, in the way of Mary.

We do this among the young, especially the most neglected.

The Marist Brothers Sydney Province

The work of the Marist Brothers began in Australia in 1872 with the arrival of four Brothers in Sydney to begin our first school – St Patrick’s in Church Hill.

The Sydney Province of the Marist Brothers formally began in 1948 when Australia divided into two provinces. Sydney is responsible for Queensland, the ACT and most of New South Wales. It shares responsibility for the District of Melanesia (incorporating Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia) with the Melbourne Province.

Today the Province is made up of just over 200 Brothers and many hundreds of lay people who participate in and help to guide the Marist Mission in this part of the world. Our main ministries are in the areas of education and welfare.

The Province ministries are coordinated and supported by the Marist Ministries Office. These works include thirty schools, all of which belong to the Association of Marist Schools of Australia (AMSA). In welfare, through Marist Youth Care, we provide a continuum of care for young people at risk - up to 80 young people at any given time. The work of Marist Youth Care is based in the Greater Western area of Sydney.

Overseeing and guiding the work of the Brothers is the Provincial. He is appointed by the Brothers’ leadership team in Rome. Assisting him is the Provincial Council – a group of Brothers elected by the Brothers themselves every three years.

It is the charism of St Marcellin Champagnat that inspires and shapes the way Marists (Brothers and Lay) bring the Good News of Jesus to birth in the lives of young people.
